Saltwater Fly Fishing Charters
We fish from a 17' Boston Whaler Montauk. A stable, capable platform built for these waters. Anglers cast from a large flat platform off the bow, whether we're sitting on anchor, tied up to the kelp, moving under power, or being poled into position. We track down showing fish, bait balls, or try likely spots. The primary technique is the stripped fly, casting ahead of fish and stripping back to trigger an aggressive take. The ability to shoot some line will make you significantly more effective out there, and if you're looking to sharpen up before your trip we offer casting instruction. At times it will be more practical to wade from shore or use the jet boat to access the flats of the estuaries.
WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE WATEROur primary target is Coho salmon. Early season - June through August Coho are cruising the Strait in schools, actively hunting bait fish and aggressive on the fly. They're true predators and will crush the fly with everything they've got. As late summer turns to fall, Coho begin staging near their home rivers, calling for a change in tactics and presentation — some of the most technical and rewarding fishing of the season.
At certain tides and times of year we'll find Chinook salmon shallow enough to target with a fly. These are powerful, hard-fighting fish and hooking a saltwater Chinook on a stripped fly is a genuine achievement in the sport. When Pink salmon are moving through the Strait, the action can be relentless. Schools of migrating pinks pushing through our waters offer some of the most consistent fly fishing you'll find anywhere. And for something truly special, sea-run Cutthroat trout cruise the shorelines just miles from their home creeks, searching for food in the shallows. Ranging from 12 to 24 inches, these yellow bellies are, in this guide's opinion, among the most beautiful trout on the planet, and an absolute blast on light gear.
